ELECTION AND VICTORY IN 2014
Kothapalli Geetha contested the 2014 Indian general election as a candidate of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) from the Araku Lok Sabha constituency in Andhra Pradesh. Araku is known for its diverse tribal population and is categorized as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved constituency. She had left the YSRCP party in July 2015.
Electoral Performance:
She won the election with a significant margin. Geetha received a total of 413,191 votes, which was 45.42% of the total votes cast. This result marked a significant gain for the YSRCP, as they secured the seat from the Indian National Congress (INC).
Vote Margin and Turnout:
The majority margin was 91,398 votes. The second-placed candidate, Gummidi Sandhyarani of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), received 321,793 votes (35.38%). The voter turnout in this election was 72.92%, which was an increase of 5.91% from the previous election.
Political Significance:
This victory was particularly notable due to the significant swing of +25.58% towards the YSRCP, indicating a substantial shift in voter preference in the Araku constituency. The win also highlighted the declining influence of the INC in the region, as their vote share decreased dramatically.
